Bear Lake Watershed Alliance

Picture
If you see just one sunrise or sunset on Bear Lake, its clear why those who love it formed an organization to protect and enhance it.
In 2008 the Bear Lake Watershed Alliance (BLWA) was created with a mission “to preserve, protect and improve the health and natural character of the Bear Lake watershed.”

Bear Lake formed naturally between 10,000 and 75,000 years ago. It covers approximately 1,744 surface acres and is about 24 feet deep at its maximum depth. About two-thirds of the lake is less than 20 feet deep. The volume of Bear Lake is estimated to be 26,503 acre-feet. The shoreline is estimated at 7.62 miles and at its widest dimension, it is about 2.38 miles.
The flow of water from the one outlet of Bear Lake forms the headwaters for Little Bear Creek that is one of the tributaries to Bear Creek.

As a sub watershed of Greater Bear, we will benefit from the approval of the management plan by federal and state authorities. BLWA is able to seek grants through the Greater Bear Watershed to help fund projects identified in the management plan. And we are committed to continue to work on the action items identified in the plan. We welcome all to help volunteer with projects.

Since we have been approved as a 501 (c) 3 organization in the IRS tax code, donations to the BLWA are tax deductible.

Come join us as the BLWA meets the 4th Wednesday of each month, 7:00 PM, at the Bear Lake Township Hall, May – October. The Annual Meeting is the last Saturday of July.
